Opening rail terminal in Poland

Last 15 September, Schavemaker achieved a fantastic milestone with the opening of our renovated Rail Terminal in Kąty Wrocławskie. Schavemaker has owned the terminal since 2007. The renovation began in 2013 and took more than two years to complete.

Schavemaker’s investment at the container terminal site in Kąty Wrocławskie was completed in August 2015. The success of this project has made this Rail Terminal the most modern in Poland. The total costs of the investment amounts to more than six million Euro including a considerable amount received through an European subsidy.

The investment consists of the following:
- Construction of an office
- Special asphalt covering 50,000 m² (5 ha) of paving and sewers
- Storage depot for liquid containers
- 800 metres of rails and new switches
- 2 x new reach stackers with 45T lifting capacity, brand name Kalmar
- 1 x new Electric RTG Crane, 24 metres tall, 32 metres wide

The Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane is in particular ultra modern because of its electrical drive and that it runs on wheels rather than on rails. This offers a significant cost advantage in the daily operations.

The terminal is secured, seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Management of the terminal is supported by a modern IT system that caters to EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) and data transfer using RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentification).

This is largest investment realised to date by the Schavemaker group outside of the Netherlands. The location of the investment in Kąty Wrocławskie is not accidental. The terminal is located 1 km from the A4 motorway in the direct vicinity of the major economic zones in Poland (Wałbrzyska Special Economic Zone, Legnicka Special Economic Zone and Tarnobrzeska Special Economic Sub-zone Wrocław-Kobierzyce). These zones contain concentrations of large numbers of manufacturers. The goods they produce are ideally suited for container transportation, e.g. consumer electronics, household appliances, food, machinery and equipment.
